The Color Purple contains a lot of symbolism and themes that the author is trying to convey. A few symbols i noticed in the Novel were Celie's picture of Shug, the color purple, and the quilts they made.
The picture of Shug Celie has in the beginning of the book symbolizes love, and what Celie wants but cant actually seem to have in her life. She remarks that Shug's eyes seem sad, but only really considers this once, and focuses on her beauty instead. Her eyes foreshadow the cruelty Shug has toward Celie when she first meets her, but with Celie's loving attention, Shug quickly becomes beautiful again in her eyes, and sees the beauty in Celie as well.
The color Purple represents not only the beauty in the world and people that we don't always notice, but i believe the color symbolizes Celie herself. Like the color, Celie's kindness and gentle obedience and caring nature weren't always noticed by her family, and were often taken for granted. She rarely even saw the beauty in herself. Near the end of the novel, Shug, the person who first saw beauty in her, tells her about her philosophy on the color purple. Celie comes to love herself and appreciate the color purple, along with many of her family members, like Mr.---, who didn't see it near the beginning of the novel.
The quilts that Celie and the other characters made, as well as the pants, may have symbolized the people in her life, her family, friends, and other relationships. All of the pieces of fabric for the quilt or pants appear very different, but are stitched together, or held together by Celie, to make something practical, warm and even beautiful.
