1. (p.6) “…her hair like somethin’ tail.” (Simile)
Celie is describing Shug Avery's hair when she first sees it in a photograph, remarking that it looks like an animals tail, a fox's maybe. She means this in a good way, as Celie falls in love with Shug from the photograph.
2. (p.40) “…like what I said took the wind out her jaws.” (Imagery)
After Celie admitted that she had told Harpo to beat Sofia because she was jealous of her, it took a lot of the anger out of Sofia, and filled her more with pity for her. What she said had taken the want to fight or argue with Celie out of her system, and she gets over it quickly after this.

When shug first steps out of the carriage and Celie sees her for the first time, she is astounded by how beautiful she is, even though she also looks sick and thin from not eating much. Celie says its like everyone wanted to get a better look at her, it is used to emphasize shug's beauty.
